State Historical Building Rental Information (Des Moines)

Stop by and visit the State Historical Museum of Iowa located in the Historic East Village Neighborhood in Des Moines! We are available for rent to the general public, businesses and other state agencies.
Our museum offers a variety of event spaces to accommodate a group size from 10–400. Our sky-lit atrium is perfect for a wedding reception; consider our Cowles-Kruidenier Auditorium which is available for film screenings, presentations and lectures or book one of our multiple classrooms for your meetings or luncheons.
Café Baratta’s is open Monday through Saturday for lunch from 11am–2pm, but can hold private dinners or receptions up to 50 guests on evenings and weekends. Our Café Terrace is connected to Café Baratta’s on the third floor of the museum and offers a beautiful view of the State Capitol and downtown Des Moines. The Café Terrace is available for wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate receptions, dinners and much more!
Lastly, the State Historical Building’s Grand Terrace, which has street level access from Grand Avenue, can accommodate up to 500 seated for a corporate dinner or reception.

Our Atrium at the State Historical Building is the large open space located immediately beyond the main entrance doors off Locust Street. The Atrium is surrounded by our exhibits and is approximately 10,000 square feet. Perfect for receptions or corporate dinners, the Atrium can accommodate 350 guests seated.
The Cowles-Kruidenier Auditorium located on the first floor of the State Historical Building is available for training, presentations, film screenings, recitals and much more! The Auditorium can accommodate 248 guests and is handicap accessible. A sound booth is located at the back of the Auditorium. Please contact the Facility Rental Coordinator for details on audiovisual/equipment provided in the Auditorium. Minimal technical support is available from the Museum. Clients are advised to bring their own staff.
The Café Terrace is located on the Third Floor of the State Historical Building is connected to Café Barattas. Our Café Terrace has stunning views of the State Capitol and Downtown Des Moines skyline. The Terrace is available for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, corporate receptions and much more! The maximum seated capacity for the Café Terrace is 160.
The Grand Terrace is available for wedding ceremonies, concerts or receptions and can fit up to 500 guests seated. Guests can access the Grand Terrace from Grand Avenue.
We have multiple classrooms available at the State Historical Building. The capacity for the rooms will range from 15–100 guests. Most room set-ups can accommodate classroom, theater or u-shaped. Projectors, screens and polycom conference phones are available for the classrooms if needed.
Guests may self-park in the free parking ramp located at the corner East Grand Ave and Pennsylvania Avenue.
From the West: Take I-235E to EXIT 8B which is the E 6th St exit toward Penn Ave. Turn right on East 6th Street. Turn left onto East Locust Street.
From the East: Take I-235W to EXIT 8B which is the E 6th St exit toward Penn Ave. Turn left on East 6th Street. Turn left onto East Locust Street.
