Volunteer for American Spirit Day at the State Historical Building

For Immediate Release August 23, 2002

DES MOINES, Iowa—The State Historical Building in Des Moines will be host to a variety of activities on "American Spirit Day," Wednesday, Sept. 11. Volunteers are needed to be part of this important event which will commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Events will be taking place from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help with set up and clean up; to act as room monitors, runners and "Ask Me" people; and to help with reception tables, audio/visual recording, food service and assisting artists and performers.

On Sept. 19, 2001, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs launched the American Spirit Project as an initiative for Iowa artists, historians, cultural organizations and communities to document, commemorate and interpret a renewed sense of pride in being and American.

On Sept. 11, 2002, American Spirit Project Grant recipients will be exhibiting their individual and group projects at the State Historical Building to members of the community. There will be performances in the Iowa Public Theater, discussion groups, a hands-on art project, videos, and displays. Free lunch will be provided on the Grand Terrace, with all the food donated. Special quilts will be displayed from the "Show Your Colors, America" quilt project sponsored by Country Home magazine.

These activities and many more will be occurring throughout the day at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust, Des Moines. For more information or to volunteer, contact Deirdre Geisler at 515-281-7471 by Sept. 6.
