Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center offers workshop Feb. 19
For Immediate Release February 13, 2008
(DES MOINES, Iowa) – Richard St. John, author of Stupid, Ugly, Unlucky, and Rich: Spike’s Guide to Success and 8 to be Great has been added to Monday’s Cultural Advocacy Day schedule of workshop presenters.
St. John will present a free workshop at 3 p.m. Monday at the State Historical Building as part of the Iowa Cultural Coalition’s Cultural Advocacy Day. The State Historical Building is at 600 E. Locust Street in the Des Moines’ Historic East Village. St. John’s presentation is being offered through the Des Moines Public Library, 1000 Grand Avenue in Des Moines, where St. John will speak at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Fresh off his 8 To Be Great book tour, St. John will share the story of his road to success, as well as tips for how anyone can live an above-average life. After the presentation, there will be a brief question and answer session, followed by a book signing. Books will be available for sale before and after the event.
St. John is an award-winning communicator. His design and photography work have appeared in prestigious publications such as Communication Arts. His corporate videos and scripts have won top international awards, and his marketing communications company, The St. John Group, of Toronto, has thrived for more than 25 years.
After spending 10 years interviewing some of the world’s richest and most successful business moguls, St. John gathered together the most common traits and techniques of highly successful persons.
His step-by-step, how-to manuals for success have helped several “average” persons crack the code for high achievement in the business world by relying on simple, no-jargon terms to explain his eight-step game plan.
In addition to winning numerous awards for his corporate videos and scriptwriting, he is an avid marathon runner and mountain climber, having scaled the summits of both Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua.
Iowans will gather at 9 a.m. Monday at the State Historical Building for the Iowa Cultural Coalition’s Cultural Advocacy Day. Participants will receive advocacy training, review ICC’s legislative platform and learn how to contact legislators.
A rally will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a march at noon to the State Capitol. Throughout the morning, participants can enjoy entertainment while making large, bright signs to carry to the Capitol during the march.
From noon to 3 p.m., Iowans can visit with legislators and invite them to help create a new piece of public art in the Capitol Rotunda while enjoying more entertainment.
Free workshops will begin at 3 p.m., including St. John’s presentation; a roundtable discussion about culture, arts and history in Iowa; a review of federal formula grant initiatives; and how to secure sponsorships for nonprofit organizations – from $5,000 to $50,000.
Following the workshops, ICC will host a legislative reception at 5:30 p.m. at the Grand Piano Bistro, 506 E. Grand Avenue. Participants are encouraged to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, beverages and live musical performances from “CAUCUS! The Musical” and jazz musician Roxi Copland.
In conjunction with CAD, Sandy Boyd and Richard Koontz of the Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center will offer an “IOWA Principals and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence” workshop 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 19 for nonprofit organizations.
The free workshop will help management, staff, board members, volunteers and professional association employees learn how to improve their nonprofit organizations.
People planning to attend CAD Feb. 18 and/or the Nonprofit Workshop Feb. 19 are encouraged to contact Oxana Bedore at mobedore@smunet.net with name, organization (if applicable), address, phone and category of culture (artist, musician, administrator, preservationist, supporter, etc.) by Friday, Feb. 15.

We serve the needs of every Iowan by supporting the people and resources in the state that make it a joy to live here.
The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is responsible for developing the state’s interest in the areas of the arts, history and other cultural matters with the advice and assistance from its two divisions: the State Historical Society of Iowa and the Iowa Arts Council. DCA preserves, researches, interprets and promotes an awareness and understanding of local, state and regional history and stimulates and encourages the study and presentation of the performing and fine arts and public interest and participation in them. It implements tourism-related art and history projects as directed by the General Assembly and designs a comprehensive, statewide, long-range plan with the assistance of the Iowa Arts Council to develop the arts in Iowa.
