IHRAB
Purpose
The Iowa Historical Records
Advisory Board (IHRAB), which is established in
accord with federal regulations serves as the
central advisory body for historical records
planning in Iowa. The Board works to improve the
care of historical records by individuals and by
private and governmental organizations in Iowa;
encourages cooperative projects among statewide
institutions, promotes local records management
programs; and reviews the condition of historical
records in the state. The IHRAB is a state-level
review board for grant proposals submitted to the
National Historical Publications and Records
Commission and serves as the review panel for the
State Historical Society of Iowa's Historical
Resource Development Program grant applications.

Membership
The Iowa Historical
Records Advisory Board is appointed by the
Governor to rotating three year terms. The Board
is comprised of eight public members and the
principal administrators of the State Archives and
Iowa and the State Historical Society of Iowa. The
State Archivist serves as the coordinator for the
Board.

Meetings
The Iowa Historical
Records Advisory Board holds public meetings four
times each year. These meetings normally are held
in August, November, April and June. Three of the
four meetings are held at the State Historical
Building in Des Moines and the fourth is held at
another location in the state. All meetings are
open to the public.

Activities
The Iowa Historical
Records Advisory Board adopted a planning document
which outlines areas of concern for documentary
records in Iowa and provides suggested action
steps for improvement in those areas of concern.
In an effort to provide educational materials to
organizations and individuals who care for
historical records, IHRAB produced a series of informational
brochures which include:

addition, IHRAB has collected a number of basic
readings and pamphlets related to care of
historical documents and the care of government
records. These materials are available at various
repositories throughout the state.
