Help for Preserving Materials
The Iowa
Historical Records Board is a state-wide planning board appointed by the
Governor of Iowa to evaluate the status of
historical records in Iowa, to develop coordinated
strategies to improve public access to historical
records, to promote the preservation of original
resources in all formats, and to assist the State
Historical Society of Iowa in providing grant
funds to agencies throughout the state.
IHRAB reviews
grant applications from the Historical
Resources Development Program and to the National
Historical Publications and Records Commission of
the National Archives and Records Administration.
The
State Historical Society of Iowa's Historical
Resources Development Program is
designed to assist local organizations and
individuals preserve and protect the state's
historical resources. Grant funds have been used
to microfilm newspapers and manuscript
collections, to provide archival housing for
collections of letters and photographs, to
preserve motion picture film, to create and
implement local government records management
programs, to train local government officials in
records management techniques, and to assist local
organizations in the training of volunteers to
help preserve an area's historical resources.
These
competitive grants are awarded annually. The
professional panel which reviews documentary
collection application has prepared a funding
priorities statement to
guide applicants in selecting projects.
