Des
Moines, Iowa—Smells
of just-roasted coffee beans and fresh sandwiches will soon waft through the floors
of the Iowa Historical Museum as a popular Des Moines coffee café will
open another location there in early June.
Grounds for Celebration at the Terrace Café will offer a sit down full-service
lunch menu with rotating menu items using many local producers of seasonally fresh
products. The café specializes in "on site" artisan small batch
roasting of fine coffee from around the world. The company was the first in Des
Moines to have on-site baking in a coffeehouse environment.
The coffeehouse’s founding owners George and Jan Davis & partner Bryan
Marker will include the same coffee-related menu as the other four Des Moines
metro stores as well as an expanded Panini sandwich selection for lunch-time customers.
The café will also offer a full and varied selection of fine whole-leaf
teas, served with the expertise of the only certified tea blender in Iowa. Grounds
for Celebration also wholesales Monin flavoring syrups, Ghirardelli chocolate
syrups and sauces, Chai concentrates, biscotti, La Speciale espresso machines
and coffee related merchandise. New this year to the stores will be freshly-produced
gelato ice cream.
"We’ll be producing this in-house daily and will be able to make virtually
any flavor imaginable," George Davis said.
Artwork from the Absolute Art gallery in the East Village of Des Moines will be
featured on a rotating basis in the new café.
An agreement between Grounds for Celebration and the State Historical Society
materialized in early April. The café will be operated by the Iowa Historical
Foundation with a portion of the profits going to support the programs of the
State Historical Society of Iowa.
"We’re delighted to offer this service to visitors of the museum,"
Margi Weiss, Executive Director of the Iowa Historical Foundation said. "We
can’t wait to see the looks on our visitor’s faces as they enjoy an
espresso at the café!"
