History on the Move

Lincoln and Iowa

History on the Move

Traveling exhibit from the State Historical Society of Iowa

History on the Move is an innovative new program from the State Historical Society of Iowa that brings Iowa history to the students of Iowa.

History on the Move (HOM) features new, exciting exhibits in a mobile format that enables school children across the state to learn about Iowa history without having to travel. The first exhibit in this new format is “Lincoln and Iowa.”

This exhibit, produced in cooperation with the Iowa Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and with support from Union Pacific Railroad Foundation, highlights Lincoln’s associations with Iowa before and during the Civil War.

Did you know:

  • Lincoln owned land in Iowa?
  • Lincoln visited with Grenville Dodge in Council Bluffs to discuss a route for a transcontinental railroad across Iowa?
  • Lincoln was involved in a court case involving the first bridge across the Mississippi River?

These and more facts about Lincoln’s ties to Iowa are highlighted in the exhibit as well as a chance to see if you “measure up” to Honest Abe!

Bookings for the History on the Move Lincoln exhibit are available on a limited basis July though October. Booking are contingent on the availability of museum staff to travel and weather conditions. The exhibit can be booked by calling the State Historical Society of Iowa at (515) 281-5111.
