| The
Results are In!
Students from Iowa who participated in the National History Day competition
in College Park, Md., in June did an outstanding job representing the state again
this year. This year’s theme for National History Day was “Rights and Responsibilities
in History.” Students select historical topics to research under this theme and
compete in: Papers, Individual Documentary, Group Documentary; Individual Performance,
Group Performance, Individual Exhibit, Group Exhibit. There are both junior and
senior level qualifiers.
The final results for Iowa students competing at the 2003 National
History Day are:
David Van Tassel Founders Award: Elizabeth Skilton, Nashua-Plainfield
High School, Senior Historical Paper, “Setting the Standard: 1949 Treaty Regulates
Treatment of POWs.”
First Place Medallist: Stephen Frese, Anson Middle School,
Marshalltown; First place, Junior Individual Paper, “Aldo Leopold: An American
Prophet.”
Second Place Medallist: Matthew Wettach, Mt. Pleasant Middle
School; Second Place, Junior Individual Documentary, “Rights and Responsibilities:
The New Deal Comes to the Corn Belt.”
Third Place Medallist: Denise Wood, Ottumwa High School; Third
Place, Senior Historical Paper, “The Right to Work: Charles T. Kelley and His
‘Soldiers of Misfortune.’”
Fifth Place, Nationally/Outstanding State Award: Brian Claeys,
Emily Green, North Scott High School, Eldridge; Senior Group Documentary, “Jim
Crow Must Go: Rosa Parks and the Long Journey form Segregation to Integration.”
Sixth Place Nationally: Sarah Frese, Marshalltown High School,
Senior Individual Exhibit, “The DePriest Tea Incident ‘…A Most Unusual Affair.’”
10th Place Nationally/Outstanding State: McKenzie Fritch,
Cheyanne McGrail, Franklin Middle School, Cedar Rapids; Junior Group Exhibit,
“The Time We Forgot Humanity: Shattered Rights and Neglected Responsibilities
of the Holocaust.”
12th Place Nationally: Alicia Mangold, Jenny Rodger, Erin
Taphorn, Storm Lake High School, Senior Group Performance, “The Amish School Controversy:
Religious Rights, State Responsibilities.”
13th Place Nationally: Tyler Kirkholm, Storm Lake High School,
Senior Individual Documentary, “Wounded Knee and the Rights of Native Americans.”
Selected to present in alternative venues were:
Sarah Frese, White House Visitor’s Center. Sarah’s exhibit is also on display
at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch.

Jeralyn Westercamp, Harding Middle School, Cedar Rapids, Junior Individual
Exhibit, “Piecing Together the Truth: The Tuskegee Syphillis Experiment,” National
Museum of Health and Medicine. Jeralyn’s exhibit was selected to remain on display
through September 2004.
The “History of the American Presidency” special prize went to David Blume,
Adam Hsu, Charli Richter and Scott Walter of Johnston High School for their Senior
Group Documentary, “United States vs. Nixon.” This prize is awarded to the entry
in any category from either the Junior or Senior divisions that best demonstrates
the contributions made by an American president in the U.S. or world history.
“U.S. vs. Nixon” explores changes in presidential responsibility and the interpretation
of executive privilege as a result of the Nixon presidency and impeachment. The
students took their topic a step further to explore the case’s constitutionality
and its impact on the trails during the Clinton Administration.
